The Shah of Nabadeen
The Shah of the Nabadeen sultanate of Azaz. This shah is opulent and lavish even in his apparition. He seats prominently on his elevated throne while looking at numerous guest from above. He drops a heavy glance with hidden despise and scorn, as if nobody is worthy of his time. We meet the shah in the first book, First Light, where Crix is humbled to come any closer to the throne, because he knew there will be implications.
Never talk to the shah directly, never call his name, he has a title — the Shah of Nabadeen. He is the owner of the sultanate, if not of the whole Azaz, and that tells a lot. The power is stirring around him. The most dangerous political vermin are at full ears waiting for him to inhale and exhale sentences. The most dangerous vizier on his side, named Jaddar is sweating, because he knows this fat, ample person isn't just a royal cushion, it's a beast of its own. It's a wind, a swamp and a fire at the same time - he can change his mood at any moment.
One minute he is hungry, another — he is sad. Someone was once even ordered to be hanged in the hall because the shah was bored. He can change your life forever and if you ever dare to oppose his will — he will chain you in his underground prisons, perhaps forever. Who knows.
